The Toll House Inn Chocolate Chip (1938)
The Toll House Inn Chocolate Chip (1938)
Today it’s the most popular cookie in America, but the original Toll House Cookies, the first chocolate chip cookies, were invented right here in New England by Ruth Wakefield at the Toll House Inn in Whitman, Massachusetts, during the 1930s. Here’s the official recipe!

INGREDIENTS

  • 2¼ cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter
  • ¾ cup brown sugar
  • ¾ cup white sugar
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 1 teaspoon soda
  • 1 teaspoon hot water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 3 cups (18 ounces) semi sweet chocolate chips

DIRECTIONS

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°.
  2. Cream the butter and sugars. Add the beaten eggs. Add the baking soda dissolved in hot water.
  3. Sift together the flour and salt and add to the butter mixture. Then stir in the nuts, chocolate chips, and vanilla.
  4. Chill the dough [Editors’ note: Most people usually skip this step].
  5. Drop by the tablespoonful onto lightly greased cookie sheets and bake until browned at the edges, 10 to 12 minutes.
