This taco sauce recipe is not only easy to make and customizable, but also can be used in a wide range of dishes.
INGREDIENTS
- 2 cups tomato sauce
- 1 ½ teaspoons cumin
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon oregano
- ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- ½ cup water
- Salt to taste
COPYCAT ORTEGA SAUCE INGREDIENTS
- 1 (15oz) Tomato sauce
- 1.5 tbsp Chili powder
- (1.5 tspn Cumin)
- 1 tbsp Garlic powder
- 1 tbsp Onion powder
- 2 tbsp Apple Cider Vinegar
- 1/2 tbsp Paprika
- 1/4 tsp Cayenne
- 1/3 cup Water
- 2 tbsp Honey or Sugar
- 1/4 tsp salt
DIRECTIONS
- Add all ingredients to a large saucepan.
- Bring to the boil over medium-high heat, stirring frequently.
- Reduce to a simmer, and cook for 10 minutes.
- Serve with tacos or enchiladas, and store in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.
NOTE: Cooking this melds the flavors together "better" rather than just blending it all up. Which is also perfectly fine.
USING CHILES
- If you want to kick up the Ortega copycat recipe; rather than using any cayenne or chili powder you can use 3 dried guajillo chiles (softened).
- To soften the chiles you drop them into boiling water and turn off the heat. Let them soak for about 10 minutes.
- Instead of cooking this on the stove you will now throw everything into a blender with the chiles (minus the cayenne and chili powder) and spin it for 2-3 minutes on high speed to make it as smooth as possible.
