To become the Pope, a man must be a baptized member of the Roman Catholic Church and elected by the College of Cardinals during a conclave. While technically any Catholic male can be elected, since 1378, every Pope has been chosen from among the cardinals. To be eligible to vote in a conclave, a cardinal must be under 80 years old.
