The instrument became central to Baroque music, with composers like Bach and Weiss writing intricate works for it. Its use declined as keyboard instruments gained favor, but it remained influential in the development of music theory and performance practices. By the late 18th century, the lute had largely fallen out of favor, though it saw a revival in the 20th century as musicians and scholars sought to explore and revive its unique sound.
