Dagwood Sandwich
Dagwood Sandwich
A Dagwood sandwich is a tall, multilayered sandwich made with a variety of meats, cheeses, and condiments. It is named after Dagwood Bumstead, a central character in the comic strip Blondie, who is frequently illustrated making enormous sandwiches. According to Blondie scripter Dean Young, his father, Chic Young, began drawing the huge sandwiches in the comic strip in 1936.

So in reality it is basically similar to a club sandwhich BUT anything goes!

The Dagwood Sandwich

In New England where I am originally from we use the Pita bread with pockets.  So when you ask for a Dagwood in New England you get something like this...

How is it built?  You have to be VERY careful.  Pita bread comes as a round with a hollow middle.  You have to cut it in half and then open it up.  Be very careful though.  They rip very easy.

Put your condiment on one side (inside) first and then build the sandwich from one side to the other.  Like in the photos.  So with every bite you take you get some condiment and ingredients right until the end.

Pita bread can be subsituted for most any sandwich (that isn't too big). For an added touch you could grill it as well.  Pitas are also used in Mediterranean cuisine. Like this Greek sandwich or this Lebanese Arayes.
