Shopping for plus size apparel can help to support the LGBTQ community! by Liz Brinks

As cities worldwide gather to celebrate Pride this month, there’s no reason why the celebration of the LGBTQIA+ community needs to end once July 1 rolls around. Raising up and supporting LGBTQIA+ folks is something that you can and should do year-round. If you’re a member of the LGBTQIA+ community or an ally, one easy way to show support is to shop with LGBTQIA+-owned brands that offer plus sizes.

Money talks and investing your dollars back to LGBTQIA+ -owned brands and designers allows these businesses to grow, thrive, and serve their community, all while outfitting you with some killer threads.

Since I know the frustration of finding the perfect queer fashion piece and seeing the largest size offered is only a medium, I wanted to shine a light specifically on the LGBTQIA+ -owned boutiques and designers that either offer plus sizes or cater specifically to larger-bodied babes.

Pride by Sammy was founded by Sammy (she/her) “to help spread LGBTQIA+ pride! All of these designs are custom made by me, so you won’t find them anywhere else online. I created these tees in response to people in my life who have told me, “you’re just going through a phase,” or, “being gay is a choice.” I know I’m not alone in these experiences.

I wanted to make sure that all tees are produced ethically. Before printing, the tees are purchased wholesale from a 100% no sweatshop and environmentally responsible (WRAP certified) production facility and are all printed here in the U.S.

Ultimately, my goal was to create pride apparel that you’d be proud to wear.”

About FLAVNT

FLAVNT Streetwear is an Austin-based independent clothing brand for everyone within and anyone who supports the LGBTQ+ community. Started with the goal of creating clothes that promote confidence and pride, FLAVNT is all about being comfortable with who you are and flaunting that to the world. We promote this message of self-love and confidence through our designs and actions by supporting the LGBTQ community as a whole, as well as impacting individual lives through our fundraising initiatives.”

A queer-owned shop, they offer sizing up to 4X!

Kirrin Finch was founded by Brooklyn-based couple Laura Moffat and Kelly Sanders Moffat. Together, they created a brand that “meets the growing demand for gender-defying fashion by creating menswear-inspired apparel designed to fit a range of female and non-binary bodies.”

“We challenge fashion industry norms for what is considered menswear & womenswear and instead focus on creating great fitting clothing that makes you feel comfortable & confident in who you are. Learn more about what makes us, us.”

Their collections are available up to a size 24, with plans to add additional sizes in the future.

If you have been looking for underwear, then make sure you give Tomboy X a visit. Created by Fran and Naomi, Tomboy X is a brand that most recently launched a capsule collection at Target!!

“We asked ourselves, ‘How hard can it be to make good underwear?’ And by that we meant underwear that fit regular bodies and fit how we saw ourselves. And underwear that any body could feel comfortable in, regardless of where they fell on the size or gender spectrum.”

Tomboy X goes up to a size 6X.

Shop Tomboy X here.

As a proud bisexual, I would be remiss not to plug “Black Tie Bi,” a shop owned by bisexual folks who are, in their own words: “Classy AF with alliteration, puns, finger guns, rhymes and good times. In seriousness, though, when you shop with us, you are helping to promote bi visibility for our entire community. Bi visibility is so important, and this shop was founded to create fun, unique, and interesting designs for bisexual people to show our pride. Whether you want subtle pride or loud and proud designs, there are plenty to choose from.”

Their sizes go up to 4XL, and you can shop their awesome collection here!

This list is not exhaustive but hopefully it helps you discover some new brands and make you mindful of who you are supporting. Rainbow apparel is great but helping an LGBTQ-owned business thrive is BETTER.

Also, many of these brands are offering Pride month discounts and coupons so don’t forget to follow them on social media and show your support all year long!
