The long-awaited Obama Presidential Center will officially open to the public on June 19, 2026, coinciding with Juneteenth, a date that carries deep historical significance in American history. Located in Chicago’s historic Jackson Park on the city’s South Side, the nearly 20-acre campus is designed to be much more than a traditional presidential library. Instead, it serves as a community-focused destination dedicated to leadership, civic engagement, education, and public service.
Created by the Obama Foundation, the center celebrates the lives, achievements, and legacy of former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama. Visitors will find an eight-story museum featuring immersive exhibits, a replica of the Oval Office, personal artifacts, artwork, and stories that highlight the Obama family's journey and the impact of the Obama administration. The campus also includes a public library branch, athletic facilities, gardens, playgrounds, and gathering spaces designed to inspire future generations.
The opening weekend will feature a three-day celebration filled with live entertainment, art activities, family-friendly programming, storytelling, and community events. Most of the outdoor campus will be free and open to the public, reinforcing the center's mission of accessibility and civic participation.
By opening on Juneteenth, the Obama Presidential Center connects the story of America’s first Black president with a holiday that commemorates freedom, progress, and the continuing pursuit of equality. The landmark is expected to become one of Chicago’s most significant cultural destinations, welcoming visitors from around the world while serving as a lasting symbol of hope, democracy, and community action.
