Shit on a Shingle
Shit on a Shingle
The unofficial term—abbreviated as “S.O.S.”—became popular slang among American soldiers during World War II. It refers to “cream chipped beef on toast,” a dish that's been featured in Army cookbooks for over 100 years. Any creamed meat (shit) served on toast (shingle) could be referred to as S.O.S.

These days people use either chipped or ground beef to make this favorite.  It's considered a "hard times" or "depression era" meal.  Super simple to make with only a few ingredients. Here's the recipe.

GROUND BEEF INGREDIENTS

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 2 cups milk, 2% or higher
  • 4 Tablespoons salted butter
  • 4 Tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
  • 12 slices bread, toasted

DRIED BEEF INGREDIENTS

  • 4 1/2 oz. dried beef
  • 2 cups milk
  • 2 tbs. butter
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • Salt and pepper
  • 6 slices bread
