Classic Southern-Style SpoonBread
Classic Southern-Style SpoonBread
Spoonbread is a moist cornmeal-based dish prevalent in parts of the Southern United States. While the basic recipe involves the same core ingredients as cornbread – namely cornmeal, milk, butter, and eggs – the mode of preparation creates a final product with a soft, rather than crumbly, texture.

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 Cup Cornmeal
  • 4 Cups Milk
  • 3 tbsp Melted Butter
  • 1 ½ tsp Salt
  • 1 ½ tsp Baking Powder
  • 4 Eggs - whisked

DIRECTIONS

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
  2. In a large saucepan, add the cornmeal and milk and place on the stove on medium heat. Whisk continually until thick, about 10-15 minutes.
  3. Once thick, remove from the heat and add the butter, salt, and baking powder. Whisk until mixed.
  4. Slowly add the beaten eggs to the cornmeal mixture until everything is incorporated together.
  5. Pour into a greased 1 ½ quart baking dish.
  6. Place in the oven and bake for 45 minutes.
  7. Remove and serve immediately hot out of the oven. Best enjoyed with a pad of butter on each serving!
