Stuffing vs. Dressing: The Great Thanksgiving Divide
Stuffing vs. Dressing: The Great Thanksgiving Divide
Discover the real difference between Thanksgiving “stuffing” and “dressing,” and why so many people mix the two up. From how each dish is traditionally prepared to the regional quirks that blur the lines, this quick guide untangles the tasty confusion behind two holiday favorites.

When it comes to Thanksgiving, the table may be covered in peace and gratitude, but the language—oh honey, that’s where the battlefield lies. “Stuffing” and “dressing” are two names for the same delicious, carb-laden miracle… but the difference often comes down to geography, tradition, and a little family pride.

At its core, stuffing is exactly what it sounds like: bread, herbs, and aromatics cooked inside the turkey. It comes out rich, moist, and full of that deep, savory flavor only a roasting bird can gift it. Dressing, meanwhile, is the same mixture baked in its own pan, letting it crisp up into golden edges that could make a pilgrim weep. In the North, most folks call it stuffing no matter where it’s cooked. In much of the South, it’s dressing—even if it’s technically stuffed. Go figure.

Different names, same comfort. Call it what you want—just pass the gravy like you mean it.
