The Epic of Gilgamesh
The Epic of Gilgamesh
Gilgamesh was a legendary Sumerian king of Uruk and the central figure in The Epic of Gilgamesh, one of the oldest known works of literature, dating back to ancient Mesopotamia around 2100 BCE. He was likely a historical figure who ruled around 2800–2500 BCE, but over time, his story was mythologized as a demigod.

In the epic, Gilgamesh is described as a powerful and partly divine king—two-thirds god and one-third human—who embarks on a journey of self-discovery and seeks immortality after the death of his close companion, Enkidu. His story explores themes of friendship, heroism, mortality, and the human struggle against fate.
