Dewayne Perkins’ I Swear We’re Friends Comes to YouTube
Dewayne Perkins brings Black queer friendship and TV-inspired comedy to YouTube with his six-episode skitcom, I Swear We’re Friends.

Dewayne Perkins is bringing a fresh dose of comedy to YouTube with I Swear We’re Friends, a new digital series that mixes friendship, familiar television influences and Black queer perspectives. The six-episode “skitcom” premiered October 14, with two episodes arriving each week through October 28.

Known for The Blackening and The Studio, Perkins created, directed and stars in the independently released project. The term “skitcom” captures its playful blend of sketch comedy and sitcom storytelling, giving the series room to switch styles while keeping its ensemble at the center.

Each episode draws inspiration from a different television favorite: Girlfriends, Succession, 24, My Wife & Kids, Charmed and Touched by an Angel. That is quite the television family reunion—corporate scheming, supernatural drama and an angel on standby.

Joining Perkins are Devere Rogers, Brian Jordan Jr., Philemon Chambers and Cameron J. Ross. Guest appearances include Tracie Thoms, Courtney Taylor, Steven G. Norfleet and Noah’s Arc star Darryl Stephens. Singer Durand Bernarr provides the theme song, adding another distinctive voice to the production.

Beyond its television references, the series makes space for something viewers still do not see often enough: Black queer men whose friendships anchor a comedy. Its connection to that tradition feels especially fitting with Stephens among the guests, following the groundbreaking visibility of Noah’s Arc.

Releasing the show independently on YouTube also puts Perkins’ work directly in front of audiences. For viewers, it offers an accessible introduction to an ensemble comedy built around friendship and a shared affection for television’s many entertaining conventions.

With its mix of nostalgic influences and contemporary perspectives, I Swear We’re Friends has an inviting premise: gather a talented cast, play with the shows we recognize and let a new circle of friends claim the spotlight.
