The Origins of the Piña Colada
The Origins of the Piña Colada
Learn about the Puerto Rican origins of one of summer's best drinks.

The piña colada, that silky blend of rum, coconut cream, and pineapple juice, has origins as sunny as its flavor. Born in Puerto Rico, the drink’s history swirls with a bit of mystery and a lot of tropical charm. The origin story credits bartender Ramón “Monchito” Marrero, who reportedly created it in 1954 at the Caribe Hilton Hotel in San Juan after three months of perfecting the recipe.
