Sista: The 90s RnB Group That Launched Missy Elliott’s Career
Before her solo success, Missy Elliott was part of the 90s R&B group Sista. Learn the story of their debut, struggles, and lasting impact on music history.

Before Missy Elliott became a groundbreaking solo rapper and producer, she was part of a rising 1990s R&B group called Sista. Formed in Virginia, Sista was a female quartet consisting of Missy “Misdemeanor” Elliott, La’Shawn Shellman, Radiah Scott, and Chonita Coleman. The group signed with Elektra Records and was managed by Devante Swing of Jodeci, who took them under his production wing.

In 1994, Sista released their debut single “Brand New”, which gained some attention on the R&B charts. They recorded a full album titled 4 All the Sistas Around da World, but due to label decisions and shifting industry trends, it was never officially released at the time (though it later leaked online). Despite this setback, Sista was important for introducing Elliott’s talents not just as a singer, but as a songwriter.

After Sista disbanded, Missy Elliott transitioned into songwriting and production with her close collaborator Timbaland. That partnership eventually launched her into superstardom, making her one of the most influential figures in hip-hop and R&B. While Sista never achieved mainstream success, the group remains a fascinating chapter in R&B history—and the first major stepping stone in Missy Elliott’s legendary career.
