Pennsylvania Superintendent 3D Prints Violins to Cut Costs and Inspire Students
Superintendent Laura Jacob of Pennsylvania’s California Area School District is 3D printing violins to provide free instruments for students. Inspired by the Ottawa Symphony, her program reduces costs, sparks a love for music, and gives every child the chance to play.

At California Area School District in rural Pennsylvania, music education is taking a bold and futuristic turn. Superintendent Laura Jacob has launched a cost-saving initiative that uses 3D printing technology to produce violins for students — at just $50 apiece. This innovative program not only makes instruments affordable but also ensures that no student is left out of the music program due to financial hardship.

Inspired by the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra’s 3D StringTheory project, Jacob began with just two 3D printers. The effort has since grown into a full-scale operation with 34 printers, producing more than 200 violins in a rainbow of custom colors. The instruments are given to students free of charge, a meaningful gesture in a district with a high percentage of low-income families.

The program extends beyond simply handing out instruments. Jacob also established a 3D violin club, where students can learn to play, build confidence, and eventually transition to traditional wooden violins. Many students report that the experience has not only sparked a passion for music but has also improved their confidence and academic performance.

What began as a creative solution to budget limitations has blossomed into a model for how innovation and the arts can work hand in hand. By fusing technology, resourcefulness, and a deep belief in the power of music, Superintendent Jacob has proven that with the right vision, even a small rural district can make a big impact. At California Area School District, music truly is in the air — and now, it’s being printed one violin at a time.
