Johnny Manuel’s Journey: From Lil’ Johnny to Global Soul Star
Johnny Manuel’s Journey: From Lil’ Johnny to Global Soul Star
From church choirs to America’s Got Talent and Eurovision, Johnny Manuel’s soulful journey blends resilience, passion, and powerful vocals into a rising R&B star.

Early Life and First Foray into Music

Born on January 4, 1985, in Flint, Michigan, Johnny Manuel was raised in a musically vibrant household—his parents led choirs, and his mother directed it. The home was always alive with melodies. By age 6, he was already singing publicly, and by 10 he recorded his first demo, a cover of Run‑D.M.C. Encouraged by his family, he honed his craft in church choirs and studios.

At 13–14, “Lil’ Johnny” landed a contract with Warner Bros. Records. He toured internationally, opening for major acts like NSYNC, Jay‑Z, Destiny’s Child, and collaborated with producers including Jermaine Dupri and David Foster. His 4‑track sampler, I Got You, featured top-tier production.

🎭 Setback & Rediscovery

Despite early promise, his Warner deal unraveled. By 17, he was dropped—deeply depressed, working retail, and questioning his path. Yet, he never stopped singing, paying tribute online to icons like Prince, and eventually relocated to Los Angeles to chase a comeback.

🎤 America’s Got Talent (2017)

At 32, Johnny auditioned for AGT Season 12, performing Whitney Houston’s “I Have Nothing.” His vocal power earned unanimous praise and a golden ticket to the Judge Cuts. In Judge Cuts, after delivering Stevie Wonder’s “Lately,” guest judge Seal triggered the Golden Buzzer following an a cappella reprise of his Whitney cover. Johnny advanced to the semifinals, where he performed his original song “Blind Faith” before being eliminated.

🇧🇬 Eurovision & The Voice Australia

In 2018, Johnny joined the group EQUINOX and represented Bulgaria at Eurovision with the song “Bones”—advancing to the finals and finishing 14th. He then moved to Sydney, Australia, partly for personal reasons, including his relationship. In 2020, he auditioned for The Voice Australia, joining Team Guy Sebastian and advancing to the final four.

🎶 Solo Releases & Artistic Evolution

  • October 2022: Independently dropped his debut EP Younger Skin, featuring the music video “Out of Time”—a Groundhog-Day‑inspired journey exploring personal growth and timed resilience.

  • October 2023: Released his second EP Blue, featuring tracks like “Call It Off,” “Molotov,” and “What Am I.” This body of work reflects his evolution, blending R&B influences with raw introspection.

🧭 Identity, Influence & Artistry

Johnny credits his Motown upbringing, gospel roots, and influences such as Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Anita Baker, and Donny Hathaway as driving forces. Anchored by faith and family support, he emphasizes authenticity in his music—co-writing and collaborating to shape his unique voice.

Having endured highs (major label deal, big tours) and lows (career collapse, depression), Johnny remains resilient. He’s described as “one of the best singers in AGT’s history,” and continues evolving into an empowering figure—especially within the Black queer community.

🌟 Today & Beyond

Now based in Sydney, Johnny is steadily building an authentic solo career. With growing critical acclaim, he writes, records, and co-produces his music. His vision once centered on big television moments, but now it’s fixated on genuine storytelling: songs that resonate, heal, and empower.

He aspires to collaborate more, dreamlike orchestral settings, and continue elevating his R&B artistry. From church choir prodigy to global performer, Johnny Manuel’s journey is raw, melodic poetry—still unfolding one heartfelt note at a time.

✨ Johnny Manuel’s story isn’t just about notes—it’s about courage. He walked through fire, lost his way, but kept singing. And today, he’s weaving his soul into every lyric. That’s the power of redemption—and resonance.
