How To Make Refried Beans - From a Can!
Got a taste for refried beans but you don’t want to wait 3+ hours for them to cook? Here’s your quick solution!

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 can of Pinto Beans, whichever brand you prefer
  • 1/4 cup of olive oil or for better flavor use bacon fat or lard.
  • 3 garlic cloves
  • 1 Chile guajillo (deseeded)
  • 1 tsp of Goya adobo all purpose seasoning *
  • 1 packet of sazón (con culantro y achiote)*

DIRECTIONS

  1. Saute the garlic and chili in the oil for about 3 minutes.
  2. Add the can of pinto beans and cook about 15 minutes on medium (slight boiling is fine) to let some of the water evaporate.
  3. Add the seasonings.
  4. Remove the chili pepper.
  5. Use a masher or an immersion blender.

TIPS

  • For better flavor you would use bacon fat.  If you don't have that lard and corn oil will work.
  • You can get the Chile guajillo from Walmart normally.  Amazon also carries them.  Also your local market normally.  If you're not looking you never would've noticed them. You can also just use whatever chili you can find.  Just be sure to remove the seeds.
  • To kick this up you can top it with some shredded cheese and let it sit until it starts to melt.  Top with some green onion or cilantro and a couple slices of lime.  Also some slices of jalapeno.

*Note:  If you don't have Adobo or Sazón you could always substitute with the following

  • 1 teaspoon salt adjust after cooking, if needed
  • 2 teaspoons oregano
  • 2 teaspoons cumin
  • 2 teaspoons chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • ½ teaspoon cayenne

Enjoy with a side of tortillas, tostadas, or as a dip for chips.

Here's some variations mentioned...

What's your reaction?
