Tasty hamburger "steaks" smothered in gravy and onions. Serve with hot rice or potatoes for an easy-to-make dinner classic. It's a great way to dress up a pound of ground beef and you probably have all the ingredients on hand!

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • ¼ cup bread crumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ teaspoon seasoned salt
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ⅛ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 cup thinly sliced onion
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon cooking sherry
  • ½ teaspoon seasoned salt

DIRECTIONS

  1. Gather all ingredients.
  2. Mix ground beef, bread crumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, salt, onion powder, garlic powder, and pepper together in a large bowl until combined. Form into 8 balls and flatten into patties.
  3. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add patties and onion; fry until patties are nicely browned, about 4 minutes per side. Transfer beef patties to a plate, and keep warm.
  4. Sprinkle flour over onions and drippings in the skillet. Stir in flour with a fork, scraping bits of beef off of the bottom of the skillet as you stir. Gradually mix in beef broth and sherry. Season with seasoned salt. Simmer and stir over medium-low heat until gravy thickens, about 5 minutes.
  5. Reduce heat to low, return patties to the gravy, cover, and simmer until cooked through, about 15 minutes.
  6. Serve and enjoy!

Lastly, we have a slow cooker version.  This version has quite a bit more ingredients BUT perfect if you need to "dump and go".

INGREDIENTS

For the patties

  • 1 lb. ground beef, 7% fat
  • 1/2 cup crushed crackers, I use Ritz, but saltines work great too
  • 1 egg
  • 2 Tbsp. milk
  • 1/8 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 tsp. pepper
  • 1/4 tsp. garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp. dried oregano
  • cooking oil (for browning the patties)

For the gravy mixture

  • 10.5 oz. cream of mushroom soup, I use roasted garlic variety
  • (2).87 oz. pkts. brown gravy mix
  • 1 1/4 cup water
  • 1/2 tsp. dried thyme

Veggies

  • 2 cups sliced mushrooms
  • white onion, sliced

Slow Cooker Size

DIRECTIONS

  1. In a large bowl add the ground beef, crushed crackers, egg, milk, salt, pepper, garlic powder and oregano. Mix together with clean hands, don't over mix. Form the meat into 4 patties. Set aside.
  2. In another large bowl, whisk together the cream of mushroom soup, gravy packets, water and thyme until smooth. Set aside.
  3. In a large skillet set over medium high heat, add enough oil to coat the bottom of the pan. When the oil and pan are hot add the patties, brown on both sides. No need to cook through.
  4. Add half of the mushrooms and onions to the bottom of the slow cooker. Add the patties on top. Add remaining onions and mushrooms on top of the patties. Pour over gravy mixture.
  5. Cover and cook on LOW for 4.5 hours without opening the lid during the cooking time.
  6. Serve and enjoy!
