Easiest White Sauce (Béchamel)
Easiest White Sauce (Béchamel)
This white sauce recipe can be used as a base for many dishes, such as lasagna and chicken pot pie. I use it to make macaroni and cheese for my granddaughter. I learned to make it in home economics too many years ago to count!

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup milk, or more as needed

Milk: We've tested this recipe with everything from skim milk to heavy cream with equally good results. Since milk is the base for the sauce, the more fat it contains, the richer your white sauce will be.

Additions:  You NEED to add some seasoning to this.  Whatever you like is fine but add something.  I may suggest at a minimum of salt, pepper and paprika or garlic powder.

DIRECTIONS

  1. Gather the ingredients.
  2. Melt butter in a small saucepan over medium-low heat.
  3. Whisk in flour to form a thick paste; cook and stir until golden in color, about 5 to 7 minutes.
  4. Whisk in 1 cup milk; cook and stir until thickened, about 5 minutes more. Add more milk to reach desired consistency.
  5. Enjoy!
