Born in Queens, New York, and raised in Orlando, Florida, Bucknor’s fingers first graced the keys at age six under the tutelage of Drucilla Engel at the Iris Engel Daniel School of Music. From those early lessons, it was clear—music wasn’t just an interest. It was a language he spoke fluently.
He pursued dual degrees in Piano Performance and Computer Science at Oakwood College, but during an internship in the corporate tech world, Bucknor had a revelation: his heart belonged to music, not machines. He returned to the piano with purpose, ultimately earning a Master of Music Education from Alabama A&M University and a Doctor of Musical Arts in Piano Performance and Pedagogy from the University of Alabama.
Since 1998, Dr. Bucknor has been a cornerstone of Oakwood University's Department of Music, where he currently serves as Professor of Piano and Chair of the department. His influence reverberates throughout the institution—not only through performance, but through pedagogy and curriculum development. His students don’t just learn music theory and technique; they absorb the art of musical storytelling.
As a performer, Bucknor is anything but confined to a single style. He has brought Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3 to life alongside members of the Huntsville, Philadelphia, and Washington D.C. symphony orchestras—earning accolades for his expressive interpretation and technical precision.
He also toured internationally with the Grammy Award–winning a cappella group Take 6, where he showcased his versatility by seamlessly integrating into a vocal-centric performance environment. As accompanist for the internationally acclaimed Aeolians of Oakwood University, Bucknor has lent his talents to some of the most nuanced and dynamic choral performances on the global stage.
Bucknor is not just a performer—he’s a prolific creator. In 2016, he challenged himself to write a song every day for an entire year. The result: a staggering portfolio of original compositions that blend classical influences with contemporary styles. His music has been recorded by artists such as Virtue, Darwin Hobbs, and the Madison Mission Mass Choir. Many of his compositions reflect the same duality that defines his career: technical rigor fused with deep emotional resonance.
His album “40 Years: God Is Good” stands as a celebration of his compositional voice, performed by an ensemble of exceptional musicians—including his own children. The project is a sweeping, genre-spanning showcase of Bucknor's ability to craft melody with both precision and soul.
In 2016, he formed True Identity, a collective of young musicians from Oakwood University and Oakwood Adventist Academy. Originally assembled to demo his 365-song writing challenge, the group quickly found its own identity, evolving into a performance ensemble that has toured and recorded together.
Dr. Wayne Bucknor continues to be a dynamic force in the world of piano and music education. Whether he's performing a concerto, composing a new piece, or coaching a student toward their next recital, he approaches each endeavor with the heart of an artist and the mind of a master technician. His legacy, much like his music, is a composition in motion—never static, always resonant.
