When Mount Vesuvius erupted on August 24 in the year 79 A.D., it happened so quickly that the people of Pompeii and the surrounding areas had no time to escape. The volcano spewed out clouds of ash, burying terrified residents and preserving their last moments for archeologists to discover later.

Experts have pieced together a fairly accurate picture of what took place on that fateful summer day, but first-hand accounts of what really went down are lacking… except for one. Thanks to a man named Pliny the Younger, we have some insight into the fall of the Roman city: This is the only written eye-witness account of Pompeii's destruction.
