The Veiled Christ (Cristo Velato) is a breathtaking 1753 marble sculpture by Italian artist Giuseppe Sanmartino. Housed in the Sansevero Chapel Museum in Naples, Italy, it is globally renowned for its remarkably realistic, transparent shroud carved entirely from a single block of marble

Highlights and Fascinating Details

  • The Masterpiece: The sculpture depicts the lifeless body of Jesus Christ lying on a mattress, covered by a delicate, translucent veil. The artist’s mastery is so precise that you can see the contours of Christ's muscles, the swelling veins on his forehead, and the wounds of the crucifixion beneath the fabric.
  • The Alchemical Legend: The shroud looks so incredibly soft and weightless that a centuries-old legend persists claiming the commissioner—the scientist and alchemist Raimondo di Sangro, Prince of Sansevero—used a mysterious chemical process to "marblefy" a real veil. However, historical documents and artistic analysis confirm the veil was intricately carved by hand from the exact same block of stone.
  • Creation History: The commission was originally given to sculptor Antonio Corradini, but he died before finishing the piece, leaving only a clay model. The young Sanmartino took over in 1753 and completely reimagined the breathtaking final design.
