Perhaps no other figure in Western folklore and superstition has garnered as much fear and paranoia as the witch.
Witches have appeared in folklore for thousands of years, from Circe and Medea, to Baba Yaga and those from Grimms fairy tales. Yet as time would go on, and religious and social tensions rose in Europe, and later in America, fear of the Witch led to the persecution of many innocent lives.
So how did such a revered figure turn into such a feared being? And how did they become the spooky icon that they are today?
