Strawberry Shortcake was first introduced as a greeting card in the early 1970s by American Greetings. The Berry Universe grew to include to 32 berry sweet characters with their own personalities and pets.
The line was later expanded to include dolls, posters, and other products featuring the character and an extended cast of friends and pets. In 1980 she was released as a cartoon and has since had a few variations.
