Sarah McLachlan has unveiled “Gravity”, a touching, piano-driven ballad and the second single from her upcoming album Better Broken, set for release on September 19, 2025. The album marks her first full-length collection of original material in nearly a decade, following 2014’s Shine On and 2016’s Wonderland. Much of it was recorded at the legendary Sound City Studios in Los Angeles, with production by Tony Berg and Will Maclellan.
“Gravity” is deeply personal, born from McLachlan’s evolving relationship with her eldest daughter, India Ann. What began as a strained, often combative dynamic transformed through joint counseling sessions, where McLachlan discovered that her daughter’s resistance was rooted in anxiety and a need for validation. Out of those revelations came Gravity, a heartfelt musical message of unconditional love: a reminder that “you’re perfect the way you are.”
McLachlan has called the song one of the strongest and most emotional tracks on the new record. With its gentle instrumentation and tender vocal delivery, it recalls the heartfelt ballads that made her a defining voice of the 1990s and 2000s, while carrying the weight of lived experience.
Better Broken will feature a roster of notable collaborators, including Wendy Melvoin, Matt Chamberlain, Benny Bock, and Greg Leisz. The release coincides with McLachlan’s 30th anniversary tour for Fumbling Towards Ecstasy and the debut of the documentary Lilith Fair: Building a Mystery, celebrating the groundbreaking all-female music festival she founded.
With Gravity, Sarah McLachlan offers a poignant testament to love, reconciliation, and the unshakable bonds between parent and child—proof that even after decades in the industry, her voice still finds the most tender chords in the human heart.
