Written by Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly, the song was originally recorded by Roy Orbison in 1987, but was first made famous by Cyndi Lauper in 1989, while Orbison's recording would be released in 1992, a few years following his death.

The track was the first single off Lauper's third album A Night to Remember and would go on to peak at number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming her final U.S. top 40 hit to date. It also received a Grammy nomination for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance.  Later the song became a hit again in 2003 by Celine Dion.
