In Voodoo and related African diaspora religions, Baron Samedi, Papa Legba, and Eshu (Elegba) are powerful spiritual figures who all play significant roles at the crossroads and in connecting the human and spirit worlds. However, they each have distinct attributes and responsibilities:

Often depicted as a flamboyant, elegant figure in a black or purple outfit, with a skull or skull-like hat.
  • Connection to the Afterlife:
He is a central figure in the afterlife, sometimes seen as a guide or guardian for the deceased.

Papa Legba

  • Role:
The "guardian of the crossroads" and "key to the spirit world," Papa Legba is the first spirit to be contacted when communicating with the spirit world.
  • Appearance:
Often depicted as a benevolent old man, sometimes with shared features with Baron Samedi.
  • Connection to the Spirit World:
He is the gatekeeper between the living and the spirit world, facilitating communication and offering blessings.

Eshu (Elegba)

  • Role:
A powerful trickster deity, Eshu is a messenger between the human and spirit worlds, as well as a guardian of the crossroads.
  • Appearance:
Often depicted as a mischievous and unpredictable figure, often with a black or red color scheme.
  • Connection to the Crossroads:
He is associated with crossroads, thresholds, and other liminal spaces where different worlds intersect.
