Delta Dawn
Delta Dawn
Tanya Tucker's song Delta Dawn was originally written by Larry Collins and Alex Harvey. The song was first recorded by Bette Midler in 1971, but before her version was released, Tanya Tucker, then just 13 years old, recorded her own version. Tucker's recording, produced by Billy Sherrill, became a hit, reaching #6 on the U.S. country charts in 1972.

History and Famous Covers

Later, Helen Reddy recorded a version in 1973 that became a #1 pop hit, making it the most commercially successful version of the song. However, Tucker’s version remains a country classic and played a major role in launching her career.

Tanya Tucker's Original:

Tanya Tucker's version of "Delta Dawn" was released in September 1972, but it was released prior to Midler's cover (November 1972) and was a hit for Tucker at the time of its release.

During the time Tanya Tucker's and Helen Reddy's recordings of the song were being produced (see below), Bette Midler recorded "Delta Dawn" for her The Divine Miss M debut album, for which her bluesy version was planned as the lead single. Reddy's single was released June 1973, two days after Midler's.

Midler's Cover:

Bette Midler recorded (1971) and released her version of "Delta Dawn" in 1972, as part of her debut album, "The Divine Miss M".

Helen Reddy's Contribution:

Helen Reddy also recorded "Delta Dawn" in 1972, and it was a hit for her.

Midler's Usage:

Bette Midler often performed the song "Delta Dawn" live, including on "The Tonight Show," and it became a staple in her live sets.

Fun Fact: Bette recorded it first but Tanya beat her to releasing it by two months therefore Bette's is considered a "cover".
