Throwback: Benson Boone’s Brief but Bright Moment on American Idol
Before topping charts and selling out venues, Benson Boone first caught national attention on American Idol in early 2021. The Washington native auditioned for Season 19 with a raw, emotional performance that wowed judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan.

At just 18 years old, Boone brought a refreshing vulnerability to the stage. His heartfelt rendition of Aidan Martin’s “Punchline” showed off his powerful vocals and left the judges visibly impressed. Katy Perry even told him he could “be the winner of American Idol if he wanted to be.”

Fans quickly rallied behind him, sensing his star quality. However, in a surprising move, Boone decided to leave the competition before the Hollywood rounds aired. He later explained that he didn’t feel ready for the show’s intense spotlight and wanted to grow as an artist on his own terms.

That decision turned out to be the right one. After stepping away from Idol, Boone was discovered by Imagine Dragons’ frontman Dan Reynolds, who helped guide his early career. His breakout single “Ghost Town” dropped later in 2021, and from there, Benson Boone’s journey skyrocketed.

Looking back, Boone’s brief stint on American Idol feels like a what-could-have-been moment—but also proof that sometimes, trusting your gut pays off. Today, he’s carving out his own lane with hit songs, a devoted fanbase, and a career that’s just getting started.

Did you watch Benson’s audition live back then? Wild to think how far he’s come!
