You can plant peanuts either in the ground or plant pots (see below video).  Whatever you have for space.

Using Pots

For growing peanuts in pots, aim for containers at least 18-20 inches across and 18 inches deep per plant, ensuring ample space for the pegging process and root development.

Here's a more detailed breakdown:

Container Size:

  • Peanuts need space for their roots to grow and for the "pegs" (structures that push into the soil after flowering) to develop underground.
  • A pot that's at least 18-20 inches across and 18 inches deep is recommended per plant.
  • Some sources suggest containers at least 45cm (18 inches) deep and 45cm (18 inches) across.

Planting:

  • Plant peanut seeds 3-5cm (1-2 inches) deep.
  • Space plants 30-45cm (12-18 inches) apart.

Soil:

  • Peanuts prefer well-drained, light-colored, sandy loam soil.
  • If your soil isn't ideal, amend it with compost to improve drainage and loosen the soil.

Sunlight and Watering:

  • Peanuts need at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight per day.
  • Water regularly, especially once the pegs start to develop, keeping the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.

Hilling:

  • As the plants grow, "hill" up soil around the base of the plant to encourage more peanut development.

Timing:

  • Plant peanuts a few weeks after the last frost date, when the soil is warm and moist (around April or May).
  • Peanut plants are ready to harvest in 90 to 150 days after germination.

By choosing a pot of adequate size and depth, you provide the necessary space for your peanut plants to develop a healthy root system and produce a good yield of peanuts.
