Legend of the Bell Witch
Legend of the Bell Witch
Robertson County, Tennessee is known for one of the most famous supernatural legends in the U.S.

Near Adams, Tennessee, the legend of the Bell Witch has haunted Robertson County for over 200 years. It began around 1817, when farmer John Bell and his family reported strange phenomena—knocks on walls, eerie voices, objects thrown, and even physical attacks by an unseen presence.

The spirit, known as the Bell Witch, allegedly targeted Bell himself, and his mysterious death in 1820 only deepened the legend. Some claim the witch was a neighbor, Kate Batts, who had a feud with Bell, while others insist the entity was purely spectral.

Today, the story draws curious visitors to the Bell Witch Cave and the historic Bell cabin. Lantern tours, hayrides, and reenactments keep the eerie tale alive, making the Bell Witch one of Tennessee’s most enduring and chilling legends.
