Shuffling cards properly for poker is super important to keep the game fair and fun. Here’s a simple guide to doing it right.
Wash the Deck
- Spread all the cards face-down on the table.
- Mix them around with your hands in a circular motion.
- Do this for about 5–10 seconds to break up any clumps.
2. Gather the Cards

Bring the cards back into a neat stack without flipping any face-up.
3. Riffle Shuffle (most common in poker)
- Split the deck roughly in half.
- Hold one half in each hand.
- Use your thumbs to let the cards fall together, interleaving them.
- You can do this on the table (table shuffle) or in the air (bridge shuffle).
- Repeat this 2–3 times.
4. Strip Shuffle
- Cut off a small packet from the top and place it on the table.
- Then take another small packet from the top of the remaining deck and place it on top of the first one.
- Repeat a few times.
- It’s like quick, random cuts to mix up any patterns.
5. Riffle Shuffle Again

Give the deck another 1–2 riffle shuffles.
6. Cut the Deck
- Let another player cut the deck (split it and restack) before dealing.
- This makes the shuffle more trustworthy.
Tips for a Good Shuffle:
- Shuffle at least 4–7 times for a truly random deck.
- Use a smooth surface to avoid damaging cards.
- If you have a card shoe or automatic shuffler (like in casinos), that’s great too.
