Issa Rae’s ‘Insecure’ tops television/streaming categories with 12 nominations.

On Tuesday (Jan. 18), the nominees for the 53rd Annual NAACP Image Awards were announced in a virtual event hosted by Kyla Pratt, Marcus Scribner, and Tinashe. Nominations across 83 categories including 29 for TV and streaming, 15 for recordings, and 14 for motion pictures were revealed.

Oscar and Grammy Award-winning artist H.E.R. garnered the most nominations, with six in the music categories for Outstanding Female Artist; Outstanding Album; Outstanding Gospel/Christian Song; Outstanding Soul/R&B Song; and Outstanding Duo, Group or Collaboration (in both Traditional and Contemporary categories). Jazmine Sullivan, Chlöe, Drake, and Silk Sonic all trail right behind with four nominations each.

RCA Records has the most nominations out of all other record labels, while HBO’s Insecure received the most nominations in the television and streaming categories with 12 nods. Additionally, the accompanying documentary, Insecure: The End was also nominated.

Regina King, Jennifer HudsonLil Nas X, Megan Thee Stallion, and Tiffany Haddish are all nominated for entertainer of the year. Method Man and Mary J. Blige are both nominated for their roles on Power Book II: Ghost. Questlove’s Summer of Soul (…Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised) snagged a nomination for outstanding documentary (film), while the musician and filmmaker was also nominated for Outstanding Breakthrough Creative (motion picture).

Voting is now open to the public via the NAACP Image Awards official website and closes on Feb. 5. Winners in non-televised Image Awards categories will be honored on Feb. 21-23 via a virtual event.

The 2022 NAACP Image Awards will be a two-hour special, airing on Feb. 26 on BET at 8 p.m. ET/PT. Anthony Anderson is set to host, and the show will proceed without an in-person audience, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
