Firing the Lorentz Plasma Cannon
Firing the Lorentz Plasma Cannon
This gun, in particular, requires that you hit the target with a dart trailing a wire. Most of what we are seeing is the wire vaporizing.

Here's a more detailed explanation

What it is:

A plasma cannon is a type of experimental weapon that uses a plasma discharge to propel a projectile.

How it works:

The weapon works by creating a plasma (a state of matter where a gas is ionized, meaning it's composed of free electrons and ions) between electrodes at the rear of the barrel.

Plasma Discharge:

The plasma discharge creates a rapid increase in pressure, which then propels the projectile forward.

Plasma Guns and Coatings:

Plasma guns can also be used to create coatings by melting and accelerating tiny particles onto a surface.

Challenges:

Developing plasma guns for certain applications, such as plasma jet driven magneto-inertial fusion (PJMIF), presents challenges, including developing the required plasma guns, dealing with potential liner non-uniformities, clearing the chamber of residual high-Z gas between shots, and developing repetitive pulsed power component technologies.

Plasma in Fusion:

Plasma is also used in fusion research, where scientists use solenoids to induce current in uncharged gas, stripping electrons from the atoms and turning it into a charged plasma, a process called ionization, or plasma breakdown.
