History
Why did people eat applesauce with pork chops?
Moisture: Applesauce adds moisture to the dish, helping to keep the pork chops juicy, especially if they are cooked in a way that might otherwise dry them out. Cultural Tradition: This pairing is rooted in various culinary traditions, particularly in American and German cuisines.
The 1747 "The Art of Cookery Made Plain and Easy" features pork pie with apples recipe. Pork chops and applesauce has been consumed in the United States since at least the 1890s and became a staple in the 1970s. It has since all but disappeared in American households.
A big reason it becamse so popular in the 1970s was because of this scene from The Brady Bunch in 1971.
