Chess for Beginners

Here’s a simple guide on how to play chess, perfect for beginners:

♟️ Objective of the Game

The goal is to checkmate your opponent’s king — that means the king is under attack ("check") and can’t escape.

🧩 The Chessboard

• The board has 64 squares: 8 rows (ranks) and 8 columns (files).

• Always set up the board so that a white square is in the bottom-right corner.

• Each player starts with 16 pieces:
  1 King, 1 Queen, 2 Rooks, 2 Bishops, 2 Knights, and 8 Pawns.

🧱 How Each Piece Moves

• ♔ King: One square in any direction.

• ♕ Queen: Any number of squares in any direction.

• ♖ Rook: Any number of squares horizontally or vertically.

• ♗ Bishop: Any number of squares diagonally.

• ♘ Knight: L-shape — two squares in one direction, then one at a 90° angle. Can jump over pieces.

• ♙ Pawn: Moves forward one square (two on its first move), captures diagonally.

🧠 Special Rules

1. Castling (safety move for the king):
   Move the king two spaces toward a rook, then move that rook to the other side of the king. Conditions:

   • Neither piece has moved before

   • No pieces between them

   • King is not in, through, or ending in check

2. En Passant (special pawn capture):
   If a pawn moves two squares forward from its starting position and lands beside an enemy pawn, that enemy can capture it as if it moved only one square. Must happen immediately on the next move.

3. Promotion:
   When a pawn reaches the far end of the board, it can become a queen, rook, bishop, or knight (usually a queen).

💥 Check & Checkmate

• Check: Your king is under attack. You must stop it.

• Checkmate: Your king is in check and can’t escape — game over.

• Stalemate: A draw. The player to move has no legal move and isn't in check.

✅ Tips for Beginners

• Control the center of the board.

• Develop your pieces early (get your knights and bishops out).

• Keep your king safe (castle early).

• Don’t bring your queen out too soon.

• Think before every move — ask “What is my opponent threatening?”

Quick Board Setup

To set up a chessboard, ensure a light-colored square is in the bottom-right corner for each player. Then, place pawns on the second rank, followed by rooks in the corners, knights next to them, bishops next to the knights, and the queen on her own color (white queen on white, black queen on black), with the king on the remaining square. 

Here's a more detailed breakdown:

1. Orient the board: Make sure a light square is in the bottom-right corner for both players. An easy way to remember this is "white on the right". 
2. Place the pawns: Put the pawns on the second row (rank) for each player, directly in front of their pieces. 
3. Rooks in the corners: Place the rooks on the outermost corners of the board. 
4. Knights next to rooks: Place the knights next to the rooks on the same color. 
5. Bishops next to knights: Place the bishops next to the knights on the same color. 
6. Queen on her own color: Place the white queen on a light square and the black queen on a dark square. 
7. King on the remaining square: Place the king on the remaining square next to the queen on the same color.
