The newest EP from Act of Congress,” Dream,” offers a combination of four diverse songs that once again showcases the band’s proven talent in mixing powerful and unique instrumentals, solid vocals and harmonies, and meaningful lyrics in a way that appeals to both casual listeners and musical connoisseurs alike. The first song on the EP, the fun and catchy tune “Astronaut,” will make you want to get up and dance every time you hear it, while managing to somehow remain un-obnoxious as it runs through your head for the rest of the day. “Home” borrows a bit from the traditional gospel genre but adds AOC’s unique acoustic sounds and rhythm techniques to create a song that defies being placed into any specific musical box. The combination of Connie Skellie’s clear voice, beautiful mandolin overtones, and a slight Irish-sounding tune make the title track, “Dream,” an absolute delight for the ears. And finally, “I’ll Fly Away,” based on the traditional gospel hymn, incorporates smooth vocal harmonies and toe-tapping rhythm, while adding innovative instrumental solos that set this version apart from others. AOC has discovered the right musical combination, and they’ll no doubt continue to be successful.
