  • See through the comments

Many people making comments here fall into one of two categories: those who are too dumb to realize this album was made 21 years ago, and those who just want to bloviate about how they hate Neil Young for his politics. Disregard the comments from either category. The album is not great. There are several well-made heartfelt songs and also the usual Young penchant for instrumentals that go on too long. But I like the spareness of it and his attempt to express a troubled time.

Predictably politics has made its way into the reviews on this release. It sounds like a Neil Young album. If you like Young’s music then consider supporting him.

Despite my dislike for Neil as a person, is the music on this album good? Not really. The production is off. The drums sound great, but the instrumentals feel kinda uninspired and the guitar sounds less gritty than it should. This album feels like they’re both trying too hard and not trying hard enough, this applies twofold to the long songs. Not something I would return to. After the Gold Rush is the greatest folk album of all time. Neil Young has always been left-leaning, with his hatred for the southern US inspiring the songs Southern Man and Alabama. This in turn inspired Lynyrd Skynyrd to make Sweet Home Alabama and poke fun at Neil in its lyrics, but Skynyrd and Neil were friendly with each other despite their completely different political views. It’s a shame to see that in his old age, Neil Young has abandoned that sentiment, and has decided to use silly publicity stunts to express his hatred of free speech and bodily autonomy. As I said, Neil has always been a leftist. But he never seemed brainwashed or committed to upholding the status quo until now.
  • An ideal crisp

I like to set my Toaster at 7.5 or so. This slice hits that perfect level of crisp.
