  • For the faithful...

For someone looking to try Parquet Courts for the first time, this isn't a good starting point. In fact, I'd say it's a terrible starting point. If you're already a fan, and more than willing to roll with the punches the band doles out, then good for you, because this one will challenge you. Like the main review says (I believe it comes from Allmusic), this is more a peephole into whatever Parquet Courts is working on currently, than a collection of songs. Actually, it isn't a collection of songs by any stretch. Either way, I enjoy it. Not the same way I enjoy their previous albums and EPs, but I keep returning to it nonetheless.

The experimental and abstract-sounding "Monastic Living" is a risky undertaking by Parquet Courts, and the result is refreshing and brilliant. Conceptually, the EP is anti-commercial and anti-narrative. With one exception, there are no vocals, instead beautiful electric guitar and synthetic noises/distortion set inside fluid structures. I was reminded of Velvet Underground's extended instrumentals in certain places. "Monastic Living" has a bit of a Dada attitude too. It's anti-song/rock album in the way the early 20th c. movement was anti-art; the EP doesn't play by the rules. I can't say enough good things about "Monastic Living." Bravo, PC.

As a huge Parquet Courts/Parkay Quarts fan, I was super excited to find out they made this. Upon first listen, it's a good mix of Sunbathing Animal esque punk and weird Berlin era Bowie instrumentals. Andrew Savage is an eccentric, and it really shows on this.
