Tems Become First African Act To Win The 'Best New Act' Category

Nigerian singing sensation Temilade Openiyi popularly known as Tems has emerged as the Best New Artist award at the 2022 Soul Train Awards, making her the first African to win the category.

The singer/songwriter was nominated for the award alongside fellow Nigerians CKay and Fireboy and American artistes, Coco Jones, Dixson, Doechii, Muni Long and Steve Lacy.

Beyonce was the night biggest winner as she won, Album of the Year for the fourth time with ‘Renaissance’, Song of the Year for the third time with ‘Break My Soul’, and Best Collaboration for ‘Make Me Say It Again, Girl’, which she was featured on by Ronald Isley & The Isley Brothers. 

Other winners on the night include, Silk Sonic consisting of Bruno Mars & Anderson Paak who won Video of the Year with ‘Smokin Out the Window’, Jasmine Sullivan who won Best R&B/Soul Female Artiste, Chris Brown who won Best R&B/Soul Male Artiste, Mary J. Blige for Certified Soul Award, Lizzo, Maverick City Music X Kirk Franklin, while the Legend Award went to The Time.
